Telangiectasias
What are telangiectasias?
Telangiectasias are commonly known as red or spider veins due to their branched appearance, typically measuring between half a millimeter and three millimeters in diameter. They result from capillary fragility that causes dilation of small blood vessels near the skin’s surface, producing a bright red coloration that may turn bluish over time. Depending on their shape, they are often classified as linear, star-shaped, tree-like, or spider-like.

Causes of Telangiectasias
They are more common in individuals with vascular or collagen disorders and in those with fair skin. Telangiectasias also occur more frequently in women, particularly those with venous insufficiency, inflammatory skin conditions such as rosacea, or a history of trauma or injury. They may also appear during pregnancy, after childbirth, or in patients who have used corticosteroids for an extended period.
Other contributing factors to the development of spider veins include excessive sun exposure, the natural aging process, lack of physical activity, insufficient skin hydration, and genetic predisposition.
Symptoms
Although most of these spider veins do not cause discomfort or pose any health risk, they can be aesthetically undesirable for some patients. They commonly appear on the face, the back, or the legs, often in spider-like patterns or as areas of redness (erythema) that fade or blanch under pressure. When red spots develop on the face, they typically appear around the nose, cheeks, and chin. In rare cases, mild bleeding may occur.

Diagnosis
A visual examination is sufficient to confirm their presence.
Treatments for Telangiectasias
There are two main types of treatments for telangiectasias, depending on the severity and extent of the visible veins on the skin.
Thermal treatment: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
At the office of Dr. Juan Carlos Lloreda, a specialist in aesthetic and anti-aging medicine, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology is used to treat this condition. The treatment effectively targets and minimizes spider veins by cauterizing the dilated blood vessels, providing immediate visible improvement.

Expectations
After laser treatments to remove telangiectasias, patients will notice smoother, clearer skin without the visible spider veins. However, it is important to note that these veins may reappear over time, and it is not possible to completely prevent the development of new vascular spider veins.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between varicose veins, spider veins, and stretch marks?
Varicose veins are dilated veins, while spider veins are tiny branch-like extensions of dilated capillaries. Stretch marks, on the other hand, have an irregular shape and result from weight gain or muscle growth; their appearance is thicker and more pronounced than that of telangiectasias.
How can I prevent more telangiectasias from appearing?
Their appearance is more common in fair skin types and in individuals with underlying vascular disorders. Telangiectasias may reappear in other areas after treatment, particularly when hereditary factors are involved. They are also associated with lack of skin hydration, insufficient physical activity, and excessive sun exposure. For this reason, maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a balanced diet helps promote good blood circulation.
Which cream is good for spider veins on the legs?
A moisturizing cream may help support the skin and improve its appearance; however, there are no topical products capable of preventing or eliminating these small red veins entirely.
Recommendations
If the appearance of telangiectasias is related to venous disorders, it is important to exercise regularly, avoid sitting or standing for long periods to promote venous return, and refrain from wearing tight clothing. Reducing alcohol consumption and limiting sun exposure are also recommended, as both can contribute to further dilation of the blood vessels.
Prevention
If the appearance of telangiectasias is associated with venous disorders, it is important to exercise regularly and avoid spending long periods sitting or standing, as this helps promote venous return, in other words, better blood circulation.
Reduce alcohol consumption, as it can cause blood vessels to dilate more easily, and avoid wearing tight clothing. However, it is important to note that there is no way to prevent spider veins entirely, and they may reappear even after treatment.
